Obituary For Ava J. Melton

Ava Melton, age 92, went home to our Lord and Saviour, while surrounded by family on Saturday, January 27, 2024, at Wapakoneta Manor in Wapakoneta, Ohio.

Ava was born in Lima, Ohio May 16, 1931. She was one of 12 children born to LLoyd and Bertha (Faulkner) Cash. She was a graduate of South High School class of 1949.

Ava was known for her loving spirit, hard work, and devotion to her family. These traits carried her through difficult times and lifted up all those around her. Her family home was on West Wayne Street, in Lima, Ohio. With its long porch, glorious peony bushes, and stunning clematis vine, it became a beloved gathering spot for extended family and friends, where Ava cooked "Noonies" for generations of kids and shared laughs at her kitchen table.

She met her husband, Harold Melton, at Acme Photofinishing in Lima, Ohio. They were married in 1956. When he passed at the age of 43 in 1972, Ava became the breadwinner for her sons and daughters. She reentered the work force at St. Rita's Hospital, where she retired as Head of the Dietary Dept. after 25 yrs. of service.

Ava had a special gift for childcare. She was a Sunday School teacher for the 3 and 4 yr. old class at High Street United Methodist Church. She along with her husband helped with the youth group. She was a lifelong member of High St Church, which later moved to Westside United Methodist Church.

Ava leaves her sons Tom Zerbe of Melbourne, Florida; Tim Melton of Columbus, Ohio; and her daughter Robin Melton Strange of Elida, Ohio. Her loving grandchildren Jared Zerbe of Panama; Jason Binkley of Elida, Ohio; Amber Burden Tickle of Elida, Ohio; Nick Kunkleman of Batavia, Ohio and Jennifer Melton of Columbus, Ohio. Her great grandchildren Zavier, Gavin Tickle and Beau Burden of Elida, Ohio; Benjamín Zerbe of Columbus, Ohio; Finnian Kunkleman of Batavia, Ohio; and Noah, Hannah, Madeline Melton of Columbus, Ohio and Justin Baughman of Elida, Ohio.

Ava was preceded in death by her daughter Kim Kunkleman, grandson Joshua Burden, husband Harold Melton, 6 brothers and 4 sisters. She is survived by one sibling Marie Lawrence.

A service will be held on Friday February 2, 2024, at Chiles - Laman Funeral & Cremation Services, Shawnee Rd, Lima, Ohio. Private family viewing at 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. The public is welcome from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. with Roger Tickle delivering the Eulogy at 12:00 p.m. Private family burial services will be held at Woodlawn Cemetery, where Ava will be laid rest beside her beloved husband Harold.
