Obituary For Carolyn May Green

Bluffton

Carolyn May (Moyer) Green, 99, of Bluffton passed away at 6:30 a.m. on Friday, January 12, 2024. She was born at home near Mt. Cory on the family farm to Fred and Salva (Steiner) Moyer on May 16, 1924. She was the youngest of three children.

On July 21, 1946, she married Kenneth Green also of Mt. Cory and they enjoyed 49 years of marriage before his passing in January, 1996. Ken and Carolyn had known each other since the second grade and both graduated from Mt. Cory High School in 1942.

Carolyn went on to graduate from Bowling Green State University in 1946 with a degree in Home Economics. Her teaching career was long and involved different age groups. At Pemberville Local Schools (1946-1948), she taught home ec, and also supervised the cafeteria and canning of vegetables by parents and staff for school meals in the winter. She was a substitute teacher for Ayersville Local and Defiance City Schools for many years, then teaching second grade at Anthony Wayne Elementary in Defiance from 1962 to 1967. From 1967 to 1987, she taught junior high home ec for Bowling Green City Schools. Over the years, she helped hundreds of students develop their skills in reading, math, cooking and sewing. Carolyn also enjoyed teaching adult education for many years to those that wanted to learn to sew at BGJHS on Monday nights before her retirement. She enjoyed years of friendship with the various teachers she taught with and had many tales from teaching.

Carolyn was an avid traveler throughout her life. She traveled the continental United States including Hawaii and Alaska, but enjoyed the New England area the best. After her sons were grown, she traveled to Europe four times and spend two weeks in Australia. She enjoyed her winter home in Lehigh Acres, Florida for over 20 years.

Her memberships included the Eastern Star, Rawson Chapter and the Child Conservation Club (CCL) of the Cory-Rawson area. She also enjoyed playing cards, belonging to Bridge clubs, Red Hatters and Rook Clubs over the years as well as playing Euchre with her family. After retirement, she enjoyed spending time with her many friends at the Bluffton Senior Center, volunteering and serving on its board for many years, as well as being involved in various positions in her church. She took pride in the fact that she still lived at home and in her words “could get out and go” until recently. She had a “green thumb” and could make flowers or vegetables grow with what seemed like little coaxing.

Those left to cherish Carolyn’s memory are her four sons, Ed (Judy) of Ottawa Hills, Dan (Ann) of Auburn, Indiana, Tim of Mt. Cory and Terry of Bluffton; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Irene Green of Bluffton and special cousin, Evelyn Reese of Pandora.

Carolyn was preceded in death by her sister, Sara (Bill) Thomas; a brother, Richard (Doneta) Moyer; and her in-laws, Richard (Marjorie) Green, Bernard (Clorinda) Green, James Green and Joan (Bob) Warren.

A Celebration of Carolyn’s Life will begin at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, January 18, 2024 at the Mt. Cory United Methodist Church (now Church of Faith). Pastor Mike Noggle officiating. Interment will follow at Clymer Cemetery, Union Township near Mt. Cory. I am a little late, just seeing this in the BG Sentinel: I often thought of and prayed for Mrs. Green from being in her adult sewing class in BGJHS and how much I learned from her and what a wonderful teacher she was. I was happy to read she lived a long and wonderful life teaching and blessing many. June Lyon, BG

Mrs. Green was my absolute favorite teacher. She was so kind and made every class fun. She gave each of us girls in her 9th grade class in 1985 a beautiful China cup and saucer that I still have and treasure. She was a lovely woman and I learned so much from her.

We have so many wonderful and fond memories of Mrs. Green as both a neighbor on Brownwood Drive in Bowling Green and as a teacher of our three daughters - Tamra, Tracy and Kirsten. She was indeed a very special person. Although many years have passed since our last visit with her, we so enjoyed and appreciated periodic updates on her health and well being from her son, Tim. Mrs. Green was a very memorable teacher. She really cared about her students. I believe I learned more from her than any other teacher, and still use what she taught me every day.

Green Family, you have my deepest sympathy in the passing of your mom. She was a wonderful woman. I worked with her at Bowling Green Junior High. After I had my twin boys she and your father stopped on their way home from Cleveland to see the boys and visit. I had not had a Christmas card for a couple of years and wondered how she was. Rest in peace dear friend. You are reunited with your Kenneth. Love to you all. Mary Ellen Dierksheide

I was so sorry to read in the Courier of Carolyn's passing. Our families (Russell and Geneva Emans, Paul, and Carol) shared many good times. My parents especially enjoyed visiting while they resided in Fla. as snowbirds. You have my deepest sympathy. Carol (Emans) Crandall.
