Obituary For John J. Hoody

Lima, Ohio
John J. Hoody, 79, passed away on December 28, 2023, at 1:45 pm, at his residence.
John was born July 13, 1944 in Denver, CO, to John and Mary (Falk) Hoody who both preceded him in death. He was preceded in death by his husband John "J.L." Dean.
John was a native of Lima and graduate of Lima Central Catholic High School; Ohio Northern University; and the University of Dayton. John was a lifelong student, teacher, and lover of Education, Classical Music, Opera and Theater.
He taught at Lima Senior High School, Whittier Elementary, and Columbus Grove Elementary.
John performed at Encore Theater in Lima, and as an active member of the Friends of Music, helped to bring world class musicians, performers and singers to the stage of our own Memorial Hall.
Moving to New York City, where he lived for thirty years, was life changing for John. In Manhattan, he immersed himself in Broadway Theater and grand performances at the Metropolitan Opera. There he met his life partner, John Dean, and experienced a new vehicle for teaching, as he began and developed a notable career in the world of textbook publishing. Hard work and the Hoody charm eventually landed John an Editor's position at William H. Sadlier, Inc., a recognized leader in the field. He retired from there in 2009.
His extensive travel with J.L. provided him with wonderful opportunities to become a student of geography and culture, and develop his love for picture taking.
The most unique treasure for John from New York City years, was the development of a warm and personal relationship with Ms. Leontyne Price - renowned soprano; and first African American to receive international acclaim as such. She was a mainstay on the stage of the Met for decades, and performed at every significant opera house around the world.
When they retired, John and J.L. moved to Stratford, CT. J.L. expanded his culinary skills and John took on one last teaching assignment - this time at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield.
Life was good until J.L. was diagnosed with cancer and passed away in 2018.
John moved back to Lima five years ago. He reconnected with family and friends, and experienced both joy and challenges.
His accidental death was very sad. He will be dearly missed.
John is survived by his dear friend and cousin, Thomas "Tom" M. Cullen of Lima, the beloved Dean family, longtime friends, Daniel Durkin of New York City, Karan Longbrake of Lima, Tom Ritchie of Lima, and dozens of loving cousins and friends in Ohio and on the East Coast.
