Obituary For John S. Mason
Lima, Ohio
John S. Mason, 81, passed away on September 19, 2023, at his residence.
John was born July 27, 1942, in Columbus, OH, to Charles and Marian (Jones) Mason who both preceded him in death. On August 30, 1964, in North Webster, IN he married Sherri (Ferguson) Mason who survives in Lima, OH.
John was a 1961 graduate of Spencerville High School where he was one of the top pole vaulters in the state of Ohio. He received his bachelor of science degree from The Ohio State University and his masters degree in chemistry and physics from Ohio Wesleyan University. He was Chairman of the Science Department and teacher at Shawnee High School for forty-two years. He developed and implemented a course of study for marine biology at Shawnee High School. In 1980 he was nominated for the Ohio Teacher of the Year. He was also an adjunct physics professor for Ohio Northern University and Rhodes State College. For thirteen years, he was an instructor for the Ohio Motorcyclist Enrichment Program and member of their Speaker's Bureau. He was a member of the Zoning Board for Shawnee Township, member of the governing board for the Village at RiverWalk Condominium Association, member of Torch International, Fraternal Order of Eagles, Elk Rapids Yacht Club, the Shawnee, Ohio and National Education Associations, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, and past member of Fraternal Order of Elks and Shawnee Lions Club. He was also a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Lima, OH and past vice-commodore of Lima Sailing Club.
John is survived by his wife, Sherri Mason of Lima, OH, children, Dr. Kathy Mason of Findlay, OH, Dr. Pamela (Dr. Rohit Malhotra) Mason of Charlottesville, VA, grandchildren, Devin Malhotra and Shaan Malhotra, sister, Carolyn (Thomas) Winder of Ashville, NC, and ten nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his sister, Phyllis Boyer and brother-in-law, Gerald Boyer.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, October 14, 2023, at 11:00am at CHILES - LAMAN FUNERAL HOMES, SHAWNEE CHAPEL.
Visitation will be on Friday, October 13, 2023, from 6:00pm to 8:00pm at the SHAWNEE CHAPEL.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Lima Symphony Orchestra, Art Space Lima, Trinity United Methodist Church (Lima) or Deb's Dogs.
