Obituary For John W. Bishop

Lima, Ohio

John W Bishop, age 81, was called into the presence of the Lord at 5:52 p.m. on Sunday, November 26, 2023, at his son's home with the love of his family by his side.

John was born on August 9, 1942, in Lima, Ohio to the late Richard A. and Martha I. (Miller) Bishop. On June 2, 1963, he married Charlene (Kitchen) Bishop.

John is a 1962 graduate of Wapakoneta High School and retired as Detective Sergeant and Crime Scene Investigator from the Allen County Sheriff's Department and subsequently Police Chief from the Uniopolis Police Department.
He spent many years as the owner/operator of Bishop's Cove Campgrounds at Indian Lake. He was active in the Boy Scouts of America for over 40 years.

John enjoyed working on small projects and community service. He was a Basic Police Academy Instructor, specializing in Firearms, PR-24 and Kubotan. He was a member of FOP Lima Lodge #21, Lima Lodge #205 Free & Accepted Masons, Antioch Shrine, Dayton, Ohio and the Lima Shrine Club.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Charlene (Kitchen) Bishop; three sons, Paul (Sandra) Bishop, John "Wes" (Linda) Bishop II, and Adam (Jennifer) Bishop; eleven grandchildren, Paul "Skip" (Nicole) Bishop II, Meredith (Jessie) Hall, Christopher (Haily Gentry) Bishop, Michael Bishop, John "Joey" (Leeann) Bishop III, Erin (Dan) Szippl, Emily Sue (Devin Cheatham) Rial, Ethan (Katelin) Watkins, Emily Charis Sites, Noah Bishop, and Matthew Bishop; seventeen great grandchildren, Drake, Chloe, Paul "Trace" III, Sebastian, Jasper, Wren, Xavier, Remington, Isaac, Logan, Madeleine, Cohen, Oliver, Harper, Asher, Killian, and Barrett; brother, Richard (Linda) Bishop; two sisters-in-law, Janice Grisham, and Darlene (Myron) Offenbacher, and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a granddaughter, Maureen Bishop; brother, Kenneth (Karen) Bishop; two sisters, Ann (Carvel)
Crow, and Reba Bishop; sister-in-law, Barbara (Glenn) Kramer; and brother-in-law, Bill Grisham.

Funeral services will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 30, 2023, at CHILES - LAMAN FUNERAL AND CREMATION SERVICES, SHAWNEE CHAPEL. Pastor Jim Baker will officiate the service. Entombment will follow in the Memorial Park Cemetery Mausoleum.

The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 29, 2023, at the funeral home and from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 30, prior to the service.

A Masonic Memorial Service will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, and an FOP service at 8:00 p.m.
